Two members of Germany’s World Cup squad survived a serious car accident during a promotional shoot at the team’s camp in Italy on Tuesday.

Julian Draxler and Benedikt Howedes walked away unharmed from the accident which saw the car of DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein hit two people along the tracks which was closed to the public for the promotional shoot of major sponsors of the German national team, Mercedes Benz.

The two victims are reported to have sustained injuries which were treated on the spot before being taken to hospital.

Draxler and Howedes who were involved in the accident however escaped the incident unhurt and have since rejoined their team’s camp.

“During a driving event of our partner Mercedes-Benz there was a serious accident,” Germany’s team manager Oliver Bierhoff said in a statement. “We regret to say that two people were injured and treated on the spot before being taken to hospital.

“At the moment all our thoughts are with those injured. We do not have more information at this moment.”

The Germans have been preparing in Italy’s south Tyrol ahead of the 2014 World Cup where they will be facing Ghana as one of its opponents in Group G.

The three-time World Cup winners will however not face the Black Stars until the second group matches of next month’s tournament on June 21 in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza.
