Video: Alex Ferguson told Danny Welbeck not to play for Ghana

Published on: 06 April 2011

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been exposed as the man who told Danny Welbeck not to play for Ghana.

The 20-year-old striker made his senior bow for the Three Lions on Tuesday in a friendly against Ghana.

The youngster, who is currently on loan at Sunderland, is also eligible to turn out for the Black Stars.

This means he could still switch allegiance, as only a cap in a competitive fixture confirms commitment to one particular nation.

Welbeck had hinted after the Ghana-England friendly that he would consider playing for the Black Stars only to say on Manchester United’s website this week that he will only play for the Three Lions.

It has been revealed that Ferguson, the coach from Scotland, told the player on Friday to commit to England instead of Ghana.

Ferguson said the promising frontman will continue to pursue further recognition with the Three Lions.

"I would only get involved if he asked me," said the Scot.

"He spoke to me some time ago about the Ghana thing. At the time I advised him to play for England.

"Whether that has changed or not I don't know.

"There is an obvious attraction to play for England I would have thought.

"He lives in this country. He was born here. I don't see it being a huge problem as far as England is concerned.

"I think he will probably choose England.”
