Australia captain Lucas Neill says he is confident the Socceroos can beat Ghana and finish top of Group D at the World Cup in June.

Galatasaray defender Lucas Neill believes the Australian national team are capable of finishing top of their group at the World Cup that also includes Serbia and Germany.

The Socceroos captain is of firm belief that the team, on their day, can take it right up to the likes of Germany and do well against Ghana and Serbia to finish at the helm of Group D, although he admitted it would be a difficult task.

"We will have to be right on our game to qualify for the knockout stage, not 95 per cent, but 100 per cent to give ourselves the best chance to qualify,” he said.

“It is not any easy group. We've got Germany first-up, then face Ghana at altitude which is going to be extremely difficult, then Serbia, a country like Australia that is very much on the improve.

"But I believe anyone can beat anyone in this group. There's nothing to stop us from finishing first in the group."
