Andre Ayew agrees Marseille extension

Ghana World Cup star Andre Ayew has agreed in principle to extend his stay with French champions Olympique Marseille until 2014, killing off interests from stellar European suitors.

A statement on the club's website read: "Sporting director Jose Anigo announced that officials of Olympique Marseille and Andre Ayew have reached an agreement in principle to the extension of the player's contract for a period of three years."

Ayew's previous deal was due to expire in the summer of 2011.

The 20-year-old and the club have yet to agree on some minor details of his new contract.

Ayew, who impressed on loan spell at newly-promoted Ligue 1 side Arles Avignon in the second-tier league, returned to the Stade Velodrome this summer.

He was also loaned out to Lorient for the 2008/2009 season under coach Eric Gerets.

"I am a bit relieved because this will end the speculations. The French League is starting this weekend and I should be a happy ahead of the start. I'm keeping my focus and I hope things are successful at the club. A lot of things have changed and I'm prepared to play my best," Ayew told Ghanasoccernet.com

The son of African football legend and Marseille great Abedi Pele, who will seeking to emulate his father by winning the Uefa Champions League this term.

He played a pivotal role in Ghana's quarter-final berth at the World Cup finals and was linked with a host of stellar European clubs.

Andre's youngster brother Jordan also plays for Marseille and is regarded as a key member of their set-up for the upcoming campaign.
