Bribery allegation rocks Ghana league

Ghana's top flight league has been hit with a serious allegation of bribery as officials of title chasing Aduana Stars have named in a plot.

With just four matches remaining and competition for the title as well as the bid to avoid relegation extremely tight, Aduana have been accused of attempting to bribe their opponents for Sunday's league game.

Aduana Stars, who are just three points away from leaders Ashgold, are reported to have attempted to bribe Heart of Lions players ahead of their meeting on Sunday.

Ghana's home-based national team captain Edmund Owusu Ansah, who is also the captain of Lions, says he has been approached by an official of Aduana, who wanted him to throw the game.

Ansah, who has no blesmish on his character, says he was invited by someone claiming to be an official of Aduana to meet him at a hotel in Accra where he alerted his team officials.

"As soon as he was contacted he told me about it and we asked him to go for evidence so that we can get these cheats arrested," Lions CEO Desmond Frimpong Manso said.

"He asked Edmund to convince some of his colleagues to throw the game in exchange for huge amounts of money. He even said the match referee Patrick Aziza has been bribed already.

"We managed to get the car number of the guy who withhed his number in his telephone calls to Edmund. The Car is a Toyata Matirx and black in colour with registration number is GT 3532 2010.

"We are asking the Ghana FA to set in an call in national security to investigate this serious incident so not to taint the image of Ghana football.

"The World Cup is just around the corner and this is not what we want to hear. The GFA must investigate this and secure the image of our football."

But Aduana, who are just in their first season in the top flight, some club are trying desperately hard to taint their image because of their momentous achievements in their first season in the top flight.

"This is jealousy, an act of desperation for some clubs who have been in the league for many years yet they have achieved nothing," Aduana president George Gyawu said.

"They can't stand the fact that in our first season we are challenging for the title. We will not relent on our quest to win the title.

"There's no one person in our club with that car registration number and we want the GFA to look into this matter for our name to be cleared.

"We have won all our matches fairly and will continue to play by the principle of Fair Play in football. We want the GFA to salvage our reputation."
