England confirm friendly with Ghana in March

Published on: 10 January 2011

England will face Ghana in an international friendly at Wembley on Tuesday 29 March, the English Football Association has announced.

The confirmation from the English FA on its website comes after Ghanasoccernet.com broke the news to the world on Sunday that the much-anticipated game will be played.

England have avoided several attempts by Ghana to play them but now the stage has been set for the first clash between the two sides at senior level.

With a huge and vibrant Ghanaian community living in the UK, Black Stars fans living in the European country are keen for the game to take place.

They will be seeking victory over England to gain the bragging rights in the country.

The match will be played three days after England's first Euro 2012 qualifier of the year, away to Wales, Fabio Capello's side will face the Black Stars at Wembley.

Ghana achieved the highest place of all African teams at the World Cup in South Africa last year, and were a penalty shoot out away from the semi-finals.

There have been a handful of meetings at youth level, Ghana beat England convincingly 4-0 at the FIFA U20s World Cup two years ago, while England U18s emerged the victors in 2007 in a friendly at the Priestfield Stadium.

Ghana, who reached the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, have several British-based players in their squad.

Those include Black Stars captain John Mensah, Michael Essien, who plays at Chelsea, Blackpool keeper Richard Kingson, Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan and Fulham's John Pantsil.

Tickets for Ghana at Wembley will go on sale to englandfans members on Friday 28 January, and to the general public on Tuesday 1 February.
