Former Black Stars forward Augustine Arhinful attributes player exodus to poor remunerations

Former Black Stars attacker Augustine Arhinful has blamed the massive player exodus in the county to the meagre wages footballers take in the domestic league.

According to the former Dortmund striker, players in the Ghana Premier League take as low as "GHC 300 to GHC 400" which is very inadequate to sustain them.

"When we talk about talents we have. I personally think the remuneration coming to the players is not enough. You can’t be playing for a [Ghana] Premier League team and make as little as GH¢300, GH¢400 a month. So players will continually leave the shores of Ghana,” he said on Mikki Osei Berko's After Hours show.

Several young footballers from the Ghana Premier League leave for clubs in Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya because they get paid better in those countries.

Meanwhile, Arhinful also points out the lack of sponsorship is the major reason behind the inadequate salaries because clubs don't get enough funds to run some of these expenses.

“How can you be playing in a league with no main sponsor? Because the sponsor’s money comes to augment whatever you have. We cannot play without sponsors,” he added.

The Ghana Football Association however, revealed recently the Ghana Premier League will soon have a headline sponsor after Zylofon C.E.O Nana Appiah Mensah promised to support the sport.

The Ghana Premier League is in it's twelth week of the current campaign.
