Ghana coach Stevanovic will ditch rigid tactics

Ghana’s new coach Goran Stevanovic says the Black Stars will play attacking football under his guidance.

Previous coach Milovan Rajevac was criticised for being overly defensive in his approach to matches with a rigid 4-5-1 formation.

Even though Rajevac’s formation was not good on the eye, it got the Black Stars the desired results as they reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup quarter finals.

The 44-year-old Serbian boss will switch the Black Stars playing style with the more attacking play under the 4-1-4-1 formation or 4-3-3.

Stevanovic, who was officially unveiled as the Black Stars coach on Wednesday, says they can achieve the results with attractive football.

“We must play attacking and attractive football while very cautious in defending,” Stevanovic said.

“I am sure with this we will achieve the results that the fans and the media crave for and they will enjoy both the style and the scores.

“I have nothing to hide and I am here to be CHAMPION. I will be working with great players and I am certain that these players, like me, want to champions.”

Stevanovic says he needs the support of all interested parties for the Black Stars to achieve their aims.

“Certainly, all of us present here want Ghana Black Stars and Ghana football to prosper and we must all put our shoulders to the wheel,” the shrewd tactician said.

“To the government and the GFA I need your steady backing, to my friends from the media, I need your constant support and to the fans I need your unwavering support.

“This is what will make us prosper together.”

Stevanovic guided Partizan to the Serbian league title last season before resigning in April and had previously worked as an assistant coach for his country at the World Cup in 2006.

He is Ghana's third Serbian coach since 2004 following the reigns of 56-year-old Rajevac and Ratomir Dujkovic, which were separated by a stint with Frenchman Claude Le Roy in charge.
