Ghana FA vows support for government after President Mills praise

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has vowed its support for the president of the country to ensure that his vision of developing the game in the Ghana is fully realized.

It was thought that the current GFA board was at loggerheads with government after recent public spats with some members of the ruling NDC party.

Despite claims by some party members that Prof. Mills was unhappy with the GFA, the Ghana leader heaped praise on the federation on Friday at forum for journalists for its excellent work over the past few years.

The GFA has welcomed the praise by the country’s leader, who is a former boss of Hearts of Oak, insisting they are fully in support of the president’s plan to develop the game.

We wish to thank His Excellency the President for the recognition accorded the work of the GFA and the demonstration of his commitment to continuing to support the FA in the execution of its mandate,” a Ghana FA statement read.

“As a former Sports Administrator, His Excellency has shown a personal interest in the GFA through his wise counsel, expression of insightful views on topical issues about football, and support for programmes of the GFA, among others.

“We have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the President and wish to state our commitment to supporting His Excellency in the pursuit and execution of his laudable agenda for the development of football in our country.”

Apparently referring to the confusion over the government's nomination of Abedi Pele for a post on the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football, he said it was not the intention of the government to cause confusion in the GFA.

"It was a mix-up. What we were doing was for Ghana to fill a lacuna that seemed to exist...If my attention had been drawn to it I would have taken the right decision"

Abedi Pele was nominated after the government had given its blessings for Mr Nyantakyi for the post. Abedi's nomination was later withdrawn.
