Ghana's World Cup preps get cash boost

Local mining firm Goldfields Limited has presented a cheque for US$ 560,000 to aid Ghana's preparations for next month's World Cup in South Africa.

Goldfields, headline sponsor of the national team, believes the continuous monetary support will help the team go the long distance in the tournament.

"For us from the branding point of view, the further Ghana goes, the better Goldfields gets known and I would like them to win of course. Just imagine what will happen when Ghana wins, maybe there will be a spin off for us and they will say Goldfields sponsored to make it possible," Goldfields' Corporate Affairs manager Sven Lunsche said.

Ghana will begin camping in Paris, France next week to fine tune for the tourney before playing Holland and Latvia early next month.

It is believed their sponsorship deal eight years ago played a key role in Ghana's first World Cup appearance in Germany.
