Gruzah snubs E.T Mensah over increase in Premier League clubs

King Faisal Football Club president Alhaji Karim Grusah has dismissed suggestions by former Sports Minister E T Mensah to increase the number of clubs participating in the Ghana Premier League.

The Employment and Social Welfare Minister wants the number of clubs to be increased from 16 to 20 for the next campaign which begins in August.

"If we look at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi, no club will be playing on it in the coming season. This means the stadium will be not used for a whole season. So I am making a humble appeal to the GFA and PLB to consider an increase in the number of clubs in the GLO Premier to twenty to make sure the stadium is put to an effective use," Mensah said on Tuesday when the Black Stars visited the Osu Castle.

But Grusah disagrees: "E T Mensah is getting everything wrong here. How many teams play in the German Bundesliga I? Is it not 18? Torino has been relegated in Italy, have they not? They have one of the best stadia in the world yet they are not playing in the Serie A. How about that?”

Grusah believes there are a lot of pressing issues the PLB and GFA should attend to rather than pondering over the increase in clubs.

"All the clubs cannot have enough sponsorship, those who qualified to play in Africa could not play in the last two years and the standard of play has been very low. These are issues the PLB and GFA must address and not the increase in the number of clubs."
