John Mensah wins appeal over red card against Liverpool

Sunderland defender John Mensah has had his red card against Liverpool on Sunday rescinded on appeal.

The Ghana international was dismissed by referee Kevin Friend for an 81st-minute professional foul on Luis Suarez.

However, manager Steve Bruce later admitted he had been surprised to see a straight red card and the club has now successfully appealed.

Mensah was due to miss the Premier League trip to Manchester City on April 3 but will now be available.

Bruce said: 'We thank the Football Association for considering our appeal and naturally we are delighted he will be available for the game against Manchester City.'
