Kotoko officials confuse public over Dong-Bortey transfer

There seems to be conflicting views among officials of Asante Kotoko on the clear position of the club with regards to the transfer of midfielder Bernard Dong-Bortey.

The Fabulous family, mainly fans and now officials appear divided on whether or not to recruit the Aduana Stars player who has openly stated his desire to don the red jersey.

"The coach (Bogdan Korack) had requested for the services of Bortey," Nana Kwame Danquah, a member of Kotoko's communication team told Asempa FM on Friday morning.

"He was impressed with the player's performance when we played against Aduana both home and away and immediately made it clear to management he wanted him at Kotoko. Since then, he has always been asking why the transfer is delaying.

"The fans must ask themselves, is he a good player?, will he help the club in anyway if bought? In my books he will and therefore the need for fans to agree to bring in this talented player."

However, hours later on another radio station (Hot FM), Administrative manager Ben Nti who also doubles as the club's Public Relations director dismissed any interest whatsoever from within.

"Dong-Bortey's name was not part of the coach's requisition therefore I don't know where the talk of a possible transfer is coming from," Nti said.

"In fact I recieved a call from the player's manager who expressed his client's desire to come to Kotoko but then I told him blankly neither the coach nor management had expressed interest.  He is a fine player, perhaps if in future..., then so be it but for now its a definitive no."

The inconsistencies on the clear position of the club pretty much sums up what the whole transfer has been about.

The 28-year-old chose against playing for Kotoko in favour of sworn rivals Hearts of Oak earlier in his career and this, coupled with taunts to fans whenever he scored against them had contributed in making him infamous in the eyes of the Porcupine Warriors.

Even the player's offer to play without collecting a signing-on fee which clearly shows his determination to feature for the Kumasi-based club appears not enough to woo the club into making a definitive choice.

Meanwhile, reports suggests Don-Bortey is already on his way to Kumasi to finalise his move.

According to the player's manager (Siriboe), Bortey can easily move to any club of his choice though still under contract with Aduana because a clause in the agreement between the two parties permits so. This is why according to him, the player declined to a signing-on fee and only resorted to taking salary upon his move to Dormaa.

However this again, has been disputed by Operations Director of Aduana Stars, George Gyawu.

"The player is contracted to us for three years and as such if any club wants his services the most prudent thing is to notify us," he said.

He was however evasive when asked whether indeed Bortey declined to taking a signing on fee but rather gave a hint at an awkward twist this transfer could take.

"You know where we signed him from?" he quizzed rhetorically. "So this by no means is over, there is a whole lot of issues to settle even if the player should end up with Kotoko."
