Pantsil to play in Europa League tonight

Published on: 29 April 2010

Fulham defender John Pantsil will start in tonight's Europa League semi final clash with Hamburg, Ghanasoccernet can exclusively reveal.

The Ghana wing-back's inclusion in the game is a shock as it was understood that the English side asked Uefa to exclude him from their team after he suffered a serious knee injury.

This comes after the defender recovered from the injury and played his first competitive game for them on Sunday as they were beaten 2-1 by Everton even though Pantsil excelled.

Coach Roy Hodgson has now called him up for the second leg game as they seek to beat the Germans in London to reach their first European final.

Pantsil will also be seeking to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Sulley Muntari who was in action on Wednesday as his club Inter Milan reached the final of the Uefa Champions League.

His return is also a major boost for the Black Stars as it puts the players in good shape ahead of the tournament in South Africa in June.

The Ghanaian full back has been out of action since December after picking up a serious knee injury in the Cottagers' west London derby defeat against Chelsea.

The injury subsequently ruled Pantsil out of the African Nations Cup and the majority of Fulham's European campaign which has seen them progress past Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus and Wolfsburg to reach the semi finals, where they will play Hamburg next week.

The 30 year-old defender has since recovered from surgery and completed three reserve team games in a battle to make himself available for Roy Hodgson's European plans.
