Sunderland play down Mensah injury fears

English side Sunderland have played down fears over the fitness of centre-back John Mensah after Saturday's English Premier League game.

The Black Stars deputy captain was substituted at half-time against Burnley which led to speculation over his hamstring injury problems.

But manager Steve Bruce says it was just a precaution as he looks to keep the deputy Ghana skipper fit for the final three games.

He said: “John is OK. He will be fit for next week. Substituting him was a calculated gamble.

"We were 2-0 up at half-time, so it was job done and I took him off.”

Burnley keeper Brian Jensen had to pull off a fine save to keep out Mensah’s header with the home side dominating.
