The Blind Pass: A weekly feature on Ghana Premier League - Aduana Stars wraps up the title
Champions Aduana Stars

Aduana Stars secured their second league title over the weekend as West Africa Football Academy fell short yet again over the weekend. However, there is still everything to play for in the fight for survival at the foot of the log.

Champions Wa All Stars piled more misery on troubled and already relegated Bolga All Stars as they battered them by 6 goals to 1. Kwaku Asuandzie was four star hero as his four goal tally overshadowed David Abagna’s brace. Razak Abdullah got the consolation goal for Bolga All Stars.

Strikes from Rashid Alhassan and Sam Adams was all Aduana Stars needed to end the talk of a title race as they defeated Elmina Sharks by 2 goals to 1. Benjamin Tweneboah had given the visitors the lead on the stroke of halftime.

Medeama SC pipped Hearts of Oak by a goal to nil. Francis Addo got the only goal in a fixture in which there was very little to play for.

Joseph Esso’s brace ended West Africa Football Academy’s title dreams as they succumbed 1-2 to Ebusua Dwarfs at the Cape Coast sports stadium.

Asante Kotoko got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Berekum Chelsea at the Baba Yara sports stadium. Under fire striker, Saddick Adams got the all important goal for the home side.

Inter Allies gave their chances of surviving the drop a big boost as they beat fellow relegation battlers Liberty Professionals by 2 goals to 1 at the El weak stadium. Abdul Nassiru and Isaac Twum put Inter Allies 2 goals ahead before Benjamin Eshun pulled one back late on in the game.

Accra Great Olympics at least took the determination of their ill fate to the last day of the season as they won 1-0 over Ashanti Gold SC to keep their late surge on. Christopher Nettey got the only goal for the Dade boys.

A last gasp penalty decided the relegation three-pointer between Tema Youth and Bechem United at the Tema park. Aaron Awannorh’s goal was cancelled out by Bechem United’s Hamza Mohammed to leave it all squared at the break. Ekow Benson converted a 90th minute spot kick to hand Tema Youth maximum when it looked all set for a stalemate.

ADUANA STARS WRAPS UP THE TITLE..

With a game to end a rather protracted season, preseason favourites Aduana Stars have wrapped up the 2016/2017 Ghana premier league title.

It wasn’t an all conquering and a flamboyant run up to the title but Aduana Stars dug deep to gazump the season’s surprise package, West Africa Football Academy to the title. Best known for their delectable brand of football yet a perennial mid-table outfit, West Africa Football Academy surprised everybody including themselves with a tenacious and buoyant show to put them right in the midst for a title charge. Their shambolic away performances were far behind them before a glimmer of doubt could be raised. Concurrently, they blew away teams with such ferocity at their favourite home ground, notable among them was the 5-0 humbling of 20 time league champions Hearts of Oak. WAFA took charge of affairs and led the way until Aduana romped back just when it mattered most to usurp the former.

Highlights of the Aduana league win includes the pulsating 3-3 draw with Hearts in Accra which all but shot Hearts down in the title race and the hard-fought win in the title decider against WAFA in Dormaa to leave them 4 points clear at the top. An impregnable rear guard at home was also a key factor in their success story as they went the entire first round without conceding at home. Their defensive solidity never hampered their forward forays as they scored an avalanche of goals when they had the legs. Aduana Stars remain the season’s top scoring club with 43 goals and could end the campaign as the top scoring club. This is a sharp contrast to their league winning season in 2010 when they scored only a handful but relied largely on their watertight defence.

Having won the league at first attempt Aduana Stars never withered out of complacency but have since gone on to cement their place as one of the powerhouses in Ghana’s elite division. Save the 2013/2014 season where they survived the drop by a whisker, Aduana Stars have been in and around top 4 places consistently.

Congratulations to the kings of Ghana soccer!!!
