The rise of Samuel Appiah: How the Medeama youngster has dislodged experienced Amos Korankye

Published on: 07 May 2018

Medeama new sensation Samuel Appiah is the youngster who has dislodged experienced right-back Amos Korankye with his reputation soaring each passing day following his immense and flamboyant talent.

A former product of the Glo Lamp Academy, the humble and ever-smiling defender depicts a young man that is all too aware how vitally important it is that he does not forget his roots.

He has quickly grown into one of the Ghana Premier League's most exciting defensive talents, and if he manages to stay grounded off the pitch, he could soar high.

Ghanaian talent is often ushered into the pantheon prematurely but it is easy to excuse the hype that has built around the youngster in the early stages of the campaign.

His arrival in Tarkwa was low key but has already established himself after 12 matches in the Ghanaian top-flight, one billed for the future,  to hone and teach rather than one ready to play regularly.

He was brought in as a cover up for the more experienced Amos Korankye, but the right-back has taken the bull by the horn, churning out impressive displays which makes it practically difficult to bench him.

He has won over the fans in Tarkwa with his unique football IQ, calmness, composure, skill-set and surging runs.

He has convinced the top hierarchy about his quality and regarded as the next big thing for the Mauve and Yellows.

It may be early days yet, but if the youngster keeps his current demeanor, he won't last longer in the Ghanaian elite division with hoards of European scouts keeping tabs on his progress in the rich mining town of Tarkwa.

A commanding and reassured display from the defender has won him several admiration and accolade, taking stock of his situation since he gatecrashed the squad.

He has leaped over nearly every hurdle that he has been required to thus far. Predictably, won't be long before he gets international recognition due to his pure talent.

The manner in which he has matured has been superb. Appiah has missed only one fixture after being told to rest during the 2-1 win over Ashantigold at home - and slipped seamlessly into his new surroundings.

The technique that wast taught to him at Glo Lamp Academy has held him in good stead. Yet his pocket-size physical frame, despite his tender years, and positional awareness is also due to a clear natural ability.

Ironically, the man who occupied Medeama’s right-back and made the position his personal commodity last season, Amos Korankye, has struggled to cope with the quality of the youngster.

Simply put, Appiah has plodded along and progressed at a faster rate as a result.

Either way he will be difficult to dislodge.
