Abu trains with Man City for AFCON fitness

Ghana midfielder Mohammed Abu has trained with English side Manchester City to keep him fit for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Black Stars coach Goran Stevanovic was worried that his Scandinavia-based players would lose their fitness before this month’s tournament.

That is because their league finished in November which means they would have been idle for two months before the tournament.

But his parent club Manchester City invited him to train with the English top side for close to three weeks to keep him fit for the Cup of Nations.

The 19-year-old needed to stay fit for the Africa Cup of Nations after his season ended two months ago with Norwegian side Stromsgodset.

Abu impressed manager Robert Mancini who wished he could use him for the remainder of the English Premier League but for the strict rules on foreign player registration.

It was at Eastlands that a six-month loan move to German Bundesliga II side Eintracht Frankfurt was secured for him.

The Right to Dream Soccer Academy graduate is currently in Accra ready to travel with Ghana's squad for pre-Nations Cup camping in South Africa.

He is a sure bet to make the final 23-man cut for the finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Abu was named Stromsgodset's Player of the Year two months ago.

His contract with Manchester City runs out in 2014.
