Al Wehdat claim third consecutive Jordan league crown

Amman: Al Wehdat were crowned Jordan Premier League champions for the third season in a row despite suffering a 3-1 loss to Al Jazeera on Saturday.

Things were initially looking good for them when Francisco Torres fired them ahead from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute, only for Faha Yousuf to equalise for the visitors three minutes after halftime.

Al Jazeera then took the lead when Moataz Salhani struck five minutes after the hour mark, before Saleh Al Goharey added a third six minutes later to seal the win for his side.

But despite the defeat, Al Wehdat were still able to retain their title after finishing the season with a two-point lead over second-placed Al Faisaly, who were also defeated as they lost 1-0 at Al Baqa’a.

Following a goalless first half at the Prince Mohammed Stadium, Mohammed Abdel-Haleem netted the only goal of the game to win it for the hosts and, in the process, deny Al Faisaly the win which would have been enough to see them pip Al Wehdat to becoming champions.

The triumph takes Al Wehdat to 15 league titles, although they are still a long way back from challenging Al Faisaly’s record of 32 victories.

Al Wehdat are currently third in Group A in the 2016 AFC Cup campaign and need to beat Lebanon’s Al Ahed on May 10 to have any chance of advancing to the knockout round, while Al Faisaly are already assured of a top-two finish in Group B and a place in the Round of 16.

In Saturday’s other games on the final day of the campaign, That Ras beat Kurfsoum 2-0 to condemn them to relegation, while Al Hussein claimed a 2-1 triumph over Al Sareeh.
