Arsenal pioneer fan swap idea with Italy’s Serie A Ultras

Arsenal are set to invite groups of Italian Ultras into the Emirates Stadium on matchdays as they look to address issues with the atmosphere at home fixtures.

The sound levels at the Emirates have long been criticised by home and visiting supporters alike, and the club hierarchy are poised to experiment in order to stop the away section from drowning out the home contingent.

Groups of hardcore supporters from Lazio, Inter and AC Milan have been contacted as part of the plans, with a trial run expected to take place against Watford on Saturday.

However, due to strict rules in England against the use of fireworks and flares the ultras will be prohibited from involving themselves in certain displays.

The three Ultra groups, who will travel and sit separately in the 60,260 seater arena in order to prevent violence, will be bringing banners and a whole host of chants to make an impression though.

So far, their attendance is confirmed for the visits of the Hornets, Crystal Palace and West Brom, although should the trial succeed then the project will be extended for the matches involving Norwich and Aston Villa.

The Gunners stress that the move will not put regular supporters at a disadvantage, though, as the ultras will be given unoccupied seats which can be seen dotting the crowd on match days.
