Asia’s France 2019 squads revealed

Kuala Lumpur: The final squads for all 24 teams at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 were officially unveiled on Monday, marking one of the final milestones in the build-up to the tournament.

China PR and Thailand were among the Asian sides to have their playing lists confirmed on the final day, after Australia, Korea Republic and Japan had all finalised their squads earlier in May.

Stars selected for China PR

Jia Xiuquan took 26 players with him from Beijing last Friday, and all of China PR's recognised stars made it into the final 23 unscathed.

Captain Wu Haiyan and 2018 AFC Women’s Player of the Year Wang Shuang headline the squad, while AFC Women’s Asian Cup top scorer Li Ying was selected alongside fellow striker Wang Shanshan.

Of the 26 players to have reached the provisional squad, goalkeeper Yang Yan, forward Yang Man and youngster Xie Qiwen were the unlucky three to miss out on a place in the squad.

Towering goalkeepers Xu Huan (20) and Peng Shimeng (21) are the two youngest players in the squad, while Zhang Rui, at 30, is the oldest.

China PR will play their last pre-tournament friendly against World Cup hosts France on Friday.

Sornpao bolts into Chaba Kaew squad

Not one, but two American-raised players will feature in Thailand’s World Cup squad after goalkeeper Tiffany Darunee Sornpao had her France 2019 ticket stamped on deadline day.

The Kennesaw State Owls shot-stopper, who turned 21 last Wednesday, was named in Thailand’s final 23 at the expense of Yada Sengyong, having only made her international debut in March’s Cyprus Cup.

Midfielder Nipowan Punyosuk, 24, was the other player to have been named in Thailand’s preliminary squad to fall short of the final, 23-strong contingent.

Elsewhere, Thailand’s squad was as expected, with attacking trio Kanjana Sung-Ngoen (pictured above), Suchawadee Nildhamrong and Taneekarn Danga all named, joining ever-present figures such as Sunisa Srangthaisong and Duangnapa Sritala and increasingly important midfielders Silawan Intamee and Rattikan Thongsombut in the final selection.

Striala, 33, is the oldest player in Nuengrutai Srathongvian’s squad, while 2017 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship graduate Phonpirun Philawan is the youngest, at 20.

Thailand will meet Belgium in a friendly international on Saturday, before opening their France 2019 campaign against the United States on June 11.
