ATLÉTICO MADRID - Oblak closing in on record

Published on: 13 March 2016

Jan Oblak had two balls in the air on Saturday and, as we have grown used to, he grabbed both by keeping a clean sheet. The first matter at hand, and the priority, was to do his bit to ensure Atlético Madrid got the win against Deportivo. The second was to avoid conceding any goals against the club where Paco Liaño set the record for the best goals-to-games ratio in the history of the Zamora Trophy, being beaten just 18 times in 38 league matches.

The prospect of helping Liaño to keep hold of the record will have provided added motivation for Deportivo to score past Oblak. However, as he has done throughout the season, the Slovenian dealt authoritatively with everything that was thrown at him. Game by game, the former Benfica man is inching closer to taking the all-time Zamora crown. Following his latest shutout, he has only let in 12 goals in 29 rounds of action.
