Barcelona and Real Madrid begin 18-day Clasico marathon

Published on: 14 April 2011

Never before have Real Madrid and Barcelona faced each other four times in the space of just 18 days.

But this is what the Spanish football giants will do over the next few weeks, as Spain and the watching world holds its breath.

Round One of the Clasicos is scheduled for Saturday, when Real host Barca in a league game which will serve as an appetizer for the more important clashes to come.

On April 16, the Big Two will meet in Valencia for the King's Cup final, then they will clash twice more in the semi-finals of the Champions League, on April 27 in Madrid and May 3 in Barcelona.

'Each one of our games against Barcelona will be different. I don't think they should have an effect on each other,' said Real coach Jose Mourinho after Wednesday's 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur in the European elite event.

'My theory is very basic: you play one and then start to prepare for the next. Tomorrow (Thursday), I'll start to think about Saturday's Clasico, not about the Copa del Rey final.'

In many ways, Saturday's league game is the least important of the four encounters because Barca are already close to clinching a third straight title.

Pep Guardiola's team have a record-breaking 84 points from 31 games, eight more than Real, who have looked more impressive this season in the cup competitions than in La Liga.

'We can now see the finish line and we will have to give it everything, football and soul,' said Barca sports director Andoni Zubizarreta.

Looking at Real, the former Barca and Spain keeper added: 'They are an enormous club with a great capacity. We will prepare for the games with respect.'

Barca have beaten Real in all five Clasicos since Guardiola took over in 2008, with 16 goals scored and just two conceded. However, Saturday's game will be difficult for the Catalans because of the absence of veteran defenders Eric Abidal and Carles Puyol, both injured, and of Javier Mascherano, suspended.

Guardiola will bring veteran Gabriel Milito into defence and bring Sergio Busquets out of defence into Mascherano's anchorman role.

Real, by contrast, have no concerns now that Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Kaka, KarimBenzema and Gonzalo Higuain have all recovered fitness.

Also on Saturday, third-placed Valencia visit bottom team Almeria. Sevilla are without injury victims Jesus Navas and Frederic Kanoute at Getafe and Malaga receive Mallorca.

Sunday's games all have relegation significance, except for the Espanyol v Atletico Madrid clash.

Levante take on Hercule, Osasuna receive Athletic Bilbao, Deportivo Coruna face Racing Santander and Sporting Gijon visit troubled Real Sociedad.

The 32nd round of games ends on Monday with fourth-placed Villarreal at home to lowly Zaragoza.
