Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko ready to break 16-year old Olympic games jinx

Coach of the national U-23 team, the Black Meteors, Ibrahim Tanko says the team is poised to qualify for the Olympic games in Tokyo next year. 

The Black Meteors continue their journey for a place in Japan next year by hosting Gabon in the qualifiers of the AFCON U-23 championship in Accra on Saturday.

After dispatching Togo in the first round, the team must beat the Panthers in a two legged game to reach the final round of qualifiers for the tournament in Egypt.

Coach Ibrahim Tanko insists every tournament in important for fans of football in Ghana and the team is ready to go all out to ensure qualification to the Olympic games.

"Well I think the pressure is here in Ghana. Not even the under-23, we are talking about the Black Stars and it’s been a while since we won something in terms of trophy for the nation,' he told Cafonline.com.

"Ghana is a football nation we always want to be in any competition so once we don’t make it, the fans will not be happy. So yes, definitely there is pressure, but I think we can manage it," he added.

Ghana last played in the Olympic games in Athens 2004.
