Buffon: Bonucci’s actions were not as bad as Higuain

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has drawn comparisons between the four-match suspension of Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain and the previous rash actions of teammate Leonardo Bonucci.

Juventus have all but claimed their fifth consecutive Scudetto after title rivals Napoli were defeated 3-1 at the hands of Udinese, which saw Partenopei star Higuain dismissed and later handed a four-match ban for pushing the referee, but the 38-year-old doesn’t feel as though the striker’s actions mirrored those of Bonucci’s heated argument with the referee in the Derby della Mole.

“While I don’t wish to comment on the four-match ban, I will say to those who compare the incidents of Bonucci with Higuain that there was a difference, “the 38-year old told La Stampa.

“Referee Nicola Rizzoli explained what happened with Bonucci, Leonardo was aggressive and he approached the referee’s head but he never touched it, which makes a substantial difference.”

Buffon then took a moment to discuss his side’s difficult journey this season towards Serie A’s pinnacle.

“This year Juventus stripped our opponents of all their excuses,” he noted.

“We started with a handicap of 12 to 13 points and now we find ourselves ahead by six nearing the end of the championship, there is little else that can be said.
