Controversial referee Mohammed to handle Hearts-Kotoko clash

Published on: 17 November 2011

Referee Awal Moahmmed has been named to take charge of Ghana’s biggest match of the season between giants Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Despite being recognised as one of the country’s best referees, Mohammed was at the end of some vitriolic attacks from Kotoko during an off-season tournament in July.

Mohammed will be assisted by A.S. Malik and Tanko Ganiyu with William Agbovi acting as the fourth official in Sunday's Premier League's topliner game.

Kotoko pulled no punches in their assessment of referee Mohammed for ordering two missed spot-kicks to be re-taken in July’s President’s Cup game against Berekum Cheslea.

The club have received the flak for boycotting the medal and trophy presentation ceremony under the watch of Ghana vice president John Mahama at the Accra Sports Stadium .

Mohammed received thumbs up from many of his colleagues in the profession following his decision to take the bold decisions.

He ordered for two of the penalties to be re-taken by Berekum Chelsea after they were missed; a decision which did not go on well for the players, officials and fans of Kotoko.

The referee judged that Aboulaye Soulama, goalkeeper of Kotoko had moved from his line before the two kicks were taken. TV Replays backed the referee’s claims.

However, Premier League Assistant Referee Eric Owusu Mensah praised the confidence of Mohammed and his assistants that day.

Mohammed’s strong performance on the day will firmly establish him as one of the best referees in the country.
