Cook out for the season

Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

The 21-year-old suffered the injury during his side's victory over Huddersfield in midweek and the extent of it was revealed by Cherries boss Eddie Howe who said that Cook would be out of action for between six and nine months.

Howe told the club's official website: "It is a huge blow to a very talented player who has been a very important part of our side over the last 18 months.

"But Lewis is a strong character who only has to look around our dressing room for inspiration of how an injury like this is merely a setback and to know that he can come back better than ever.

"He will have the full support and love of everyone at the club throughout the next few months as he receives the very best treatment and rehabilitation possible."

Cook has made 56 appearances for Bournemouth since joining the club from Leeds United in 2016.

His form with the Cherries had led to international recognition. He was captain as England won the Under-20 World Cup in 2017 and was called up to the senior squad by Gareth Southgate, winning his first cap in a friendly against Italy in March.

His injury is a severe blow to the Cherries who have enjoyed such a good start to the season; that win over Huddersfield taking them onto 23 points from 15 games and they are seventh in the table, above Manchester United.

They play Liverpool at home on Saturday and are 9/2 to inflict a first defeat of the season on Jurgen Klopp's side. Liverpool are 4/7 with the draw 16/5.

Bournemouth are 8/15 to finish in the top half of the Premier League while they are 14/1 to make the top six.
