De Boer pinpoints what went wrong for Gabigol at Inter

Gabigol’s lazy attitude is the reason that he has so far failed to make any kind of breakthrough at Inter, according to former coach Frank De Boer.

The Nerazzurri signed the Brazilian in the summer of 2016 from Santos for a fee in the region of €30 million but things haven’t worked out as planned for the 21-year-old.

After just one Inter goal, he has since been farmed out on loan to both Benfica and Santos, where he is currently plying his trade for the remainder of the Brazilian season.

“He thought he was still in Brazil and would walk instead of running all the time. He wanted to get by without doing any running and didn’t understand that you had to train hard,” De Boer told ESPN.

“It would be one thing if he only didn’t play with me at Inter but even later after I left, he still didn’t play. You have to look in the mirror and prove to yourself that you can be the best or a good player, without that superstar attitude.”

However, despite his criticism, De Boer isn’t completely down on the striker’s prospects and has urged him to turn things around while there is still time.

“He has won an Olympic medal but nothing else. He has to prove himself to others, including his coach, to be a good player,” the Dutchman continued.

“I think he could still be a fantastic player because he has a lot of time left and is physically healthy. Unfortunately, European football isn’t like Brazilian football and I hope he figures it out soon otherwise it would be a big shame.”
