De Bruyne open to City armband

Published on: 18 July 2019

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne says he is open to the possibility of becoming the club's captain for this season.

Manager Pep Guardiola has already revealed he will allow the players to decide who will wear the armband this term, having seen previous skipper Vincent Kompany leave the Etihad Stadium.

Midfielder David Silva captained City for Wednesday's pre-season 4-1 friendly victory against West Ham United but there have been some suggestions De Bruyne could be given the role going forward.

The Belgian star says he is happy to be in the running and would be willing to take up the captaincy if he is voted for by his team-mates.

He said: "If the team wants me to be captain, or the club does, I would gladly accept it but I think that's something everybody needs to talk about as a team, as a club.

"This will be talked about when everyone comes back."

Manchester City are 4/6 to win the Premier League title this season, while Liverpool are 9/4 to be crowned champions of England after coming close under manager Jurgen Klopp last term.
