Essien to the rescue as Chelsea's injury woes mount

Michael Essien could be deployed to the central defensive role as doubts cast over the availability of captain John Terry ahead of Saturday's trip to Aston Villa.

The versatile midfielder could partner either Branislav Ivanovic or Paulo Ferreira in the heart of defence following the injuries to Terry and Alex - Chelsea's first choice center halves.

Even though Terry trained with the team on Thursday, its still unclear whether Carlo Ancelotti will risk him against a rugged Villa side with his troublesome back that never seems to go away.

Essien, 27, is seen as the suitable replacement for the injured duo in a position where he has in the past distinguished himself whenever called upon.

The shift could also open up a place in midfield for returning Frank Lampard after recovering from a groin strain.
