Former Tottenham Hotspurs star and now football pundit Jermaine Jenas has criticized West Ham striker Andre Ayew for diving to deceive referee Martin Atkinson insisting the Ghanaian must be punished severely.

The Ghana international appeared to simulate contact against Harry Maguire in an effort to convince referee Martin Atkinson to award a penalty.

“I would be surprised if Ayew doesn’t get done for diving there. It is a shocking dive and fair play to Martin Atkinson for spotting it, but he should have booked him,” he told BBC Sport.

Former Newcastle captain Alan Shearer had also called upon the FA authorities to ban the West Ham striker for the inciudent.

Both Shearer and Jenas have argued that a similar incident involving Oumar Niase when Everton played Crystal Palace last week.

However, because Ayew’s dive did not result in a penalty for his side, his case cannot be given the same treatment as Niasse’s, something which Premier League record goalscorer Shearer thinks is flawed.

As reported by â€‹Ghanasoccernet, Shearer - speaking on Match of the Day - said of the incident: "This one is definitely not a penalty. This is a dive. The unfortunate thing is that the panel cannot look at that. They should be able to."

"If they want to stamp diving out then the panel should be able to go back," Shearer continued. "Very much like they did last week and look at the Niasse situation. They should look at that also and he should face a ban because that’s a terrible dive."
