Black Princesses

The Black Princesses on Monday embarked on another World Cup journey, a fourth consecutive appearance at the finals but nothing to write home about it. The Princesses have never made it pass the group stages with a disappointing story since making a debut in 2010.

This time around things look hopeful, despite a tough group with USA, France and New Zealand, the ladies are being managed by Didi Dramani.

The man who led Ghana to win its first ever medal in any women’s World Cup competition. The story is more special since about 40% of the ladies that won the 2012 bronze medal in Azerbaijan with Didi are in the current squad.

The Black Princesses had a terrific campaign in the qualifiers, scoring 17 goals and conceding twice in 6 games. Their goal poaching instincts is one record the recent crop of Black Stars will be envious of, with eight ladies scoring in the six U-20 World Cup qualifiers.

France, New Zealand, USA will definitely have to watch out for the diminutive but skillful Jane Ayeyiam who bagged 4 goals in the 2012 U-17 Women’s World Cup and played a huge role in Police Ladies winning the maiden edition of the Women FA Cup.

We could also talk about the skillful attacker, Princella Aubea who was the top scorer in the National Women’s league with 16 goals. Her goals proved vital in claiming a first league title for Ampem Darkoa Ladies, breaking Hassacas Ladies’ monopoly in the league.

Sixteen year old Sandra Owusu –Ansah may be young but her talent is special. She had little time to rest as she was included in Didi’s side after playing an integral part in the Black Maidens quarter-final berth at the just ended U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.

She is also the top scorer for the Princesses in the qualifiers with 4 goals. The squad also has some of its players plying their trade abroad with goalie Azume Adams based in Sweden whiles 2nd choice goalkeeper Victoria Agyei and midfielder Fatima Alhassan play in Serbia.

The recipe of this team looks promising and although it will be a tall order, CAN Didi Dramani be the magician for Ghana despite losing the first game to New Zealand?
