El Toralin officially opened its doors on 5 September 2000, when RC Celta were the visitors for a friendly match held to mark the grand opening. The Vigo-based outfit ran out 2-0 winners, with the Celestes' former Spanish international Juanfran Garcia the first player to find the net at the stadium.
The arena owes its name to the district of Ponferrada in which its lies.
An 8,400-capacity all-seater stadium, SD Ponferradina's ground meets the UEFA stadium regulations to host international fixtures. The pitch covers an area of 105 m x 70 m.
The venue welcomed its first international match on 1 June 2001, when Spain U21s eased to a 5-1 triumph in a European Championship qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina. That victory was secured courtesy of a Pablo Couñago hat-trick and strikes from David Aganzo and Antonio Guayre.
The stadium accommodates the club's offices, a board room, press room, 16 individual and soundproof radio booths, a TV camera platform, a gym and a canteen.
