Former Ghana vice-president Alhaji Aliu Mahama has extolled the qualities of trainer Goran Stevanovic ad insists the Black Stars will end a 30-year wait for an African title.

The progression unit of the Black Stars since they hosted the tournament in 2008 is seen as the catalyst to win the tournament for the first time since 1982.

They placed third in 2008 and went a step further to grab silver at the 2010 edition staged in Angola.

Many pundits and soccer fans believe the time is ripe for the West African giant to end years of searching for an African title.

The former Ghana number two gentleman of the land remains optimistic about their chances.

He told GHANAsoccernet.com: “We have a good coach and I believe with the kind of players that we have and the right spirit, we’ll win the tournament.”

"It’s been too long a time since we won it and as you can see Ghanaians are hungry for it and so let just keep our fingers cross and see how it goes.

“I have followed their progress over the years and if you look at the fact that we came third in Ghana, second in Angola, it will only be fair if we finally come first.’’

He added: "I gather the spirit in camp in high and I will like to take this opportunity to tell players that the whole country is behind them and so they should go out there and lift the flag of the country very high."

Ghana arrived in Gabon on Friday night to begin their quest to win the cup after an intensive two-week training tour of South Africa.
