Genoa v Alessandria – Preview: Struggling Grifone hope for much needed win in Coppa Italia

Published on: 15 December 2015

Genoa will host Alessandria at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris at 19:15 CET on Tuesday for a place in the Coppa Italia quarter Finals.

The Rossoblu have yet to play a game during the competition, whereas Lega Pro side Alessandria have already played four matches beating Altovicentino, Juve Stabia and Pro Vercelli, as well as causing a massive shock by winning at the Stadio Renzo Barbera against Palermo.

Genoa come into this game on the back of a narrow 1-0 loss against Bologna due to a last-gasp winner from Luca Rossettini.

The Grigi on the other hand scored two goals in the first 20 minutes to seal an eventual 2-1 home win against Sudtirol in Group A of the Lega Pro division.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men are on a dreadful run of recent form, winning just one out of eight fixtures and currently sit just two points above the relegation zone, whilst Alessandria are unbeaten in six games.

Despite the two teams not having faced each other in decades, this fixture caries a lot of historical significance.

Alessandria and Genoa alongside Torino pushed heavily for the foundation of the Italian Football Federation, which later became the modern day Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio.

As for team news, Gasperini is expected to start winger Diego Perotti, who was sent off in Serie A at the weekend, but will be without Giovanni Marchese and Blerim Dzemaili, who are both still out injured.

Former Lazio player Angelo Gregucci is Alessandria’s current boss and will hope that top scorer Riccardo Bocalon can provide certain danger up front.
