Ghana FA in talks with Asamoah Gyan to reconsider retirement decision

The Ghana FA is in talks with striker Asamoah Gyan to urge him to reconsider his decision to make a temporary retirement from the Black Stars.

The UAE-based striker quit international football "indefinitely" citing the verbal abuse he has suffered over the past two weeks.

The move follows the Black Stars' semi-final defeat by Zambia at the Africa Cup of Nations, in which Gyan had a penalty saved.

The player has come under sustained criticism following the Black Stars' failure to win the continental crown.

Gyan's decision has been confirmed by the country's football association (GFA) which says it is in talks to try and get him to change his mind.

"The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received a letter from striker Asamoah Gyan announcing his decision to take a temporary break from the Black Stars," the Ghana FA said in a statement.

"Mr. Gyan is frustrated over the verbal abuse he has received since playing for the country at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

"The GFA is in talks with Mr. Gyan to urge him to reconsider his decision."

If Gyan sticks to his decision to quit the Black Stars to would be a severe blow to Ghana as he is the country's key striker with crucial matches in the near future.

The 2014 World Cup qualifying begins in June and the Black Stars are in a group comprising the newly-crowned African champions, Zambia.

They will also face a two-legged tie in September and October for a place in the finals of the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa.
