Ghana likely to host African U20 Championship for Libya's violence

Ghana is likely to be asked by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host the upcoming African under-20 tournament following the escalating violence in Libya.

The North African country was billed to host the youth championship which begins on March. 18 but violent protests which have killed over 100 people made the venue unsuitable for soccer action.

Xinhua sources said Ghana and South Africa were the two alternative hosts being considered by the African football governing body.

CAF is expected to take a final decision on the issue on Wednesday during its 33rd General Assembly meeting in Sudan where a new date could be announced as well.

Ghanaian sports officials were feverishly preparing to host the continental competition in the event that the West African country was called upon by CAF.

The last major soccer tournament Ghana hosted was the African Nations Cup in 2008.

Ghana also won the last U-20 tournament held in Rwanda in 2009.
