Ghanaians divided over Stevanovic future as Black Stars coach

Public discussions appear split over whether or not the Ghana FA should retain the services of Coach Goran Stevanovic.

The Serbian was unable to deliver on his promise of winning the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Rather, the Black Stars placed fourth haven been handed a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands eventual winners Zambia in the semi finals.

Since that defeat to the Chipolopolo, numerous Ghanaians have called for the immediate sacking of the coach mainly on the basis of his failure to deliver on his promise.

The critics have also had cause to question the tactics and selection  mode of the ex Partizan Belgrade manager and insist he must pay the ultimate prize in order to save Ghana’s campaign at both the 2013 and 2014 Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

Another school of thought however believe the 45-year-old be made to see out the remainder of his two-year deal which expires in 2013 to save the GFA from paying a huge compensation fee which clearly the association faces serious challenges is raising.

They also strongly believe given the experience of the failed attempt in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, Stevanovic has gained the needed tournament experience which could be crucial in Ghana’s next try in 2013 (if the Black Stars qualify).

One thing that might help Stevanovic is his impressive record with the Black Stars haven won 7 of the 10 competitive matches played under his tenure with two loses and a draw.

The decision of his retention or not however lies with the powerful 22-member Executive Committee scheduled to meet the coach on Wednesday before briefing the media on its outcome.

Stevanovic will at this crunch meeting be required to explain why the Black Stars failed to win the African crown after a staggering 30-year wait.

He is also expected to put up a staunch defence on why he should be retained – a desire he expressed after Ghana’s heartbreaking loss to Zambia.
