Government will not offer any financial hold up to any supporter group to cheer the Black Stars at the Africa Cup of Nations which kick starts on 21 January.

Many Ghanaian splinter groups were hoping to fly out to support the Black Stars in numbers but the high cost involved has scuppered their plans.

With the Black Stars keen to win their first African crown in 30 years, it is widely believed a huge supporter base can help cheer the team to victory.

But the dream of many of the fans to be at the tournament to be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial has been dealt a severe blow after the government confirmed they were financially constrained to help.

"Let me state on record that the government won't be supporting any group of fans to the tournament because we don't have the budget for it," Deputy Sports Minister Nii Nortey Dua told Accra-based Citi FM.

"Everything borders on budget and at the moment we have none for them and unfortunately we are not in a position to send anyone there.

"What has been approved is the one for the Black Stars and that’s the final one from the corridors of the government."

Government sponsored over 1,000 soccer fans to the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa to cheer the national team.

But the controversy that greeted that decision after the tournament is what might have alerted the government to pull out of any support to fans.
