Guardiola hopeful on Mendy

Published on: 19 July 2019

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has not ruled out the possibility of Benjamin Mendy being fit enough to start the Premier League campaign.

The 25-year-old France international has only started 14 top-flight games since joining City from Monaco in a £52million deal two years ago and has not been involved in the club's pre-season Asia Tour.

Mendy has struggled with knee injuries during his time with City and has not played since the Champions League quarter-final second leg clash with Tottenham in April.

When asked about Mendy, Guardiola replied: "He is getting better. Hopefully, when we get back from the tour, he will join us."

City have signed Rodri and Angelino this summer and Guardiola has indicated that he may strengthen his squad further following Vincent Kompany's exit.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager added: "We are so happy with the squad we have. I don't know if the players here will stay or new players will come but every time since I came here, I have been delighted with the players we have.

"Maybe (we will replace Kompany) but we have three incredible central defenders and Fernandinho can play in that position. We will see.

"When we go back to Manchester, we will see what we have and we will decide. Now is not the time to take big decisions about who will be with us."

City are 2/5 to beat Wolves in Saturday's Premier League Trophy Final and 4/6 to win the Premier League title once again in 2019/20.
