Hans Sarpei plays first match of the season

Ghana defender Hans Adu-Sarpei played his first match of the season on Thursday night for Schalke 04 in the Uefa Europa League.

The 35-year-old came in for Austrian defender Christian Fuchs just after the hour mark in their 5-0 drubbing of AEK Larnaca at the Neo GSP Stadium in Cyprus.

Sarpei fell down the pecking order during the reign of Ralf Rangnick but new coach Huub Stevens seems to be interested in the experienced left-back.

His contract with the Royal Blues end in the summer of 2012 but a clause in his contract entitles him to a new deal if he plays at least 20 matches.

But he has not even been on the bench for the Bundesliga side.

Sarpei made a total of 17 appearances (Bundesliga 9, Uefa Champions League 5 and DFB Cup 2) last season.
