Hodgson in the dark on Zaha demands

Published on: 20 July 2019

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson says he has heard nothing on Wilfried Zaha's alleged demands to leave the club this summer.

Ivory Coast international Zaha is reported to have told the Eagles he wants to move on amid interest from his boyhood team, Arsenal.

However, the Gunners are struggling to match Palace's asking price for Zaha and with the south London side having already sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United, they are under no financial pressure to cash in on their prize assets.

Hodgson revealed earlier this week that Arsenal had yet to come close to making a sensible bid for Zaha and is expecting the forward to remain at Selhurst Park.

Asked about Zaha's request to leave following Palace's 1-0 pre-season loss at Nottingham Forest, Hodgson replied: "He has not spoken to me. I don't know if he's spoken to the club [asking to leave],

"As far as I'm concerned, he is coming back, he is our player and I've been given no information that the club is interested in selling him at the moment. I'm just expecting him back, looking forward to working with him and seeing some of the things he can do for us.

"I think he has got another 10 days or another week of holiday. I think he is back after we play Bristol City and before we play Hertha Berlin - that gives him his three weeks off. If he wants to come back earlier we will be very happy to see him."

Meanwhile, Hodgson is keen to improve his options ahead of the start of the new season and says plenty of work is being done behind the scenes.

Hodgson said: "Our chairman [Steve Parish] and sporting director Dougie Freedman are working very hard all the time to try and improve our team and our squad.

"We would like more players, we are not alone in that respect, but I'm trusting the chairman and Dougie Freedman to bring about the signings that are possible for us."

Palace are 5/1 to be relegated this season.

The Eagles open their 2019/20 campaign at home to Everton and are 17/10 for the win with the Toffees 8/5 and the draw 9/4.
