I rejected £200,000 Bayern bribe to miss 2002 AFCON - Sammy Kuffour

Ex-Ghana defender Samuel Osei Kuffour claims he turned down a £200,000 bribe from Bayern Munich to miss the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Europeans clubs are obliged to release their players for Africa's flagship tournament but Kuffuor has told SuperSport they tried to lure him with cash to snub his country.

His then German club made numerous overtures which included the huge cash incentive to persuade him to ditch the national team and help the Bavarian chase for titles in the Bundesliga and Europe.

But he opted to show his loyalty to the national course by snubbing the several moves which also included a consultation with his late father to convince him to take the offer.

Kuffour showed up at the tournament in Mali but was sacked from camp for an alleged act of insubordination.

He was accused of negatively affecting the dressing room after he complained about the quality of food and apparel provided the team and head coach Fred Osam Duodu decided to sack him from camp.

He says the fact that he was given a 'bad boy' image made him regret his decision to turn down the offer from the German giants.

Kuffour officially brought his glittering career to an end with a historic testimonial match at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi.

The pacific is all of a sudden missing, cuz he has no answer to ur question!! A very good question indeed!! I personally even think, we should hold this CAN every 4 years like all the other continents, to make the competition even more attractive!!

How do you define arrogant my brother? Ghanaians have the mentality to keep quiet and take any stupid thing that comes their way, and whenever someone ones his mouth to prostest, he is stamped as arrogant confusinist and other names. Kufour for me was more of a fighter who fought for more benefits and better conditions for the team in camp, not for himself alone!! Ghana in fact needs more people like his kind in the furure. It hard taime we threw away the colonial mentality of yessa masssa, and fight for our rights everywhere!! Arrogant my foot!! What do you understand by the word arrogance?

I saw you talking about it on Super Sport though the amount you mentioned was 200,000 euros. But my friend, you Necodemously went for the money when you intetionally misbehaved and got sacked from camp . You called BM guys who came to meet you in Accra, took you to Amsterdam and put you on a chartered flight to Munich. According to you, you won 3-2 and you scored one of the goals. The manager after the match called you into his office and gave you a big cheque. SO WHERE WAS YOUR PATROTISM.

Dead news. Irrelevant news. Chaff. You have no balls. Why now?? Do something with your time. Say something to help GFA to move forward. Anyone who considers the past has no future. Let the past pass or else you will pass with the past. His Excellency have a good day bye

Most of the people making comment here are very stupid and makes foolish comment here, so far charles and Abrantie-In Da House have been the only wise pupil here. S Kuffour have been the most patriotic Ghanaian footballer i have ever seen for the past two decades. Starting from 1991 he played for the U17 for Ghana in Italy, 1992 he was in the black stars squad for senegal 92 and the olympic squad in Barcelona, again in 1993 U17 in Japan, then the same years 1993 U20, first in Mauritius and then in Australia, then 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta then to black stars in all the various tournament to 2006 world cup, what else does people want him to do for them to see his dedication and faithfulness for the country. Stupid fools, what have you people done for your country?.
