Inter plot Icardi renewal after release clause expires

Published on: 16 July 2018

With Mauro Icardi’s release clause having expired without a club meeting it in an attempt to sign the Inter captain, the club are now ready to discuss a new deal with the striker.

At midnight on July 15, the buyout clause in the player’s contract of €110 million for foreign clubs became invalid and with no club from outside Serie A activating it, it is no longer in place.

According to Sport Mediaset, Inter are ready to take advantage of the fact that nobody swooped to take their star man off their hands by awarding the Argentine a bumper new contract.

It is reported that initial negotiations have taken place between Icardi and sporting director Piero Ausilio to improve his current deal, which sees him earn €5.5m per season until June 2021.

With the renewal, if it progresses as the player hopes, Icardi could see his salary improve to a figure in the region of €7.5-€8m per year and would be extended by a further season until the summer of 2022.

In addition, both parties are also considering inserting another release clause which is valid only to foreign clubs, although no new figure has yet been mooted in that regard.
