Asante Kotoko versus AshantiGold

Organizers of the JA Kuffour Cup has justified the controversial decision to replay the AshantiGold-Asante Kotoko clash.

Both teams were tied at 1-1 after extra-time but instead of a penalty shootout to decide the winner, the organizers opted for a rematch.

That decision has been widely condemned by followers of the game.

But a statement signed by Primeval Consult Executive Director Jeffrey Asare read: ''With regards to the intended replay of the match, we wish to state that, it was at the instance of the Regional Minister, in consultation with the headline sponsors UMB, the two clubs and other key stakeholders.

''Mr. Osei-Mensah, in a meeting with stakeholders, insisted that, the replay, would further build unity among the two clubs, as animosity between them in recent times, had not been the best.

''He added that, the massive attendance provided, an opportunity for the region to whip up the support and interest of people in football after months of starvation, following the Anas Expose.

''According to the Regional Minister, he saw the event as a critical opportunity to revive and build a strong support base for the two teams in the region, that he supervises.

''We therefore render sincere apologies to fans, the media and the general public for the unfortunate incident, as we look forward to a better future.

''We are grateful to all those who contributed to the success of the match.''
