Klopp to take patient Reds approach

Published on: 20 July 2019

Jurgen Klopp says he learned "nothing" from Liverpool's pre-season loss to Borussia Dortmund but wasn't worried about the performance.

The Reds played the first match of their US tour on Friday evening but came up short against Klopp's old club, Dortmund running out 3-2 winners at Notre Dame Stadium in stifling conditions.

Paco Alcacer, Thomas Delaney and Jacob Bruun Larsen were on target for the Germans with Harry Wilson and Rhian Brewster finding the back of the net for a weakened Liverpool side.

Only two of the side who started the Champions League final against Tottenham in June played in the first hour with the likes of Andy Roberston, Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk introduced as substitutes.

Liverpool are currently without Alisson, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane following their international commitments this summer, while Xherdan Shaqiri is currently sidelined through injury.

Klopp wasn't unduly concerned by the performance in the loss, believing the conditions - playing in 33C - had made it tricky to get a true reflection of where his team are in their pre-season preparations.

"You could see that Dortmund are a step further in their preparations but there was a lot of good things for us as well," he said.

"How we conceded goals was a lack of organisation, but it is very difficult to have that at this stage.

"Really I learned nothing. But it is difficult when the ball isn't rolling. It was a tough night for both teams - it was really warm.

"I don't like what I see in a game in pre-season very often but there is always a reason for it. I am not over the moon with our performance but I know there is lots to come."

Liverpool are 9/4 to go one better than their runner-up finish in the Premier League this season, while they are 7/1 to retain their Champions League crown.
