Mazzola: Inter must win Europa League or season is a failure

Former Inter legend Sandro Mazzola believes the Nerazzurri must try to win the Europe League, or they run the risk of ruining their season.

Luciano Spalletti’s men crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday after failing to beat PSV, dropping them down to Europe’s secondary club competition.

With Inter already 14 points back of Juventus in Serie A, Mazzola believes the Nerazzurri must win the Europa League in order to give purpose to their campaign.

“They must try to win [the Europa League],” he told FCInter1908.it. “Otherwise their season will be a failure.

“However, the Nerazzurri have a great group of players. Maybe they took things too much for granted.

“When you take the field certain that you will win, you sometimes step out there and a disaster happens.”

Mazzola believes that too much attention was given to Barcelona-Tottenham, resulting in Inter underestimating their own match against PSV.

“All of this [Barcelona-Tottenham] only matters to a certain extent,” he added. “In the end there is a group in the dressing room that takes the field.

“They probably underestimated their opponent and thought a victory was guaranteed. You can’t do that against anyone.

“If you have good players, and Inter has them, then things will work out if you work hard enough.

“There was too much chaos, they needed to play relaxed and wait for the right time to hit back. They didn’t show that kind of patience or personality.”
