Mourinho 4/10, Lukaku 5/10 as Man United slump to defeat at Liverpool

Published on: 16 December 2018

Liverpool beat Manchester United for the first time since 2013-14 as they reclaim the top spot in the Premier League from Manchester City.

Manchester United slipped 19 points behind Liverpool with a 3-1 defeat at Anfield. More importantly, Jose Mourinho's side are now 11 points off the pace in the race for the top four.

The three goals United conceded against Liverpool took their tally to 29 -- one more than they shipped in total last season. Jesse Lingard provided the one highlight for the travelling fans but his equaliser in the first half turned out to be nothing more than a consolation as Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench to score twice in the second half.

Positives

After a slow start to the season because of a post-World Cup injury, Lingard is finally fit again and back scoring goals. He continued his knack of scoring big goals in big games -- his only goals this season have come against Arsenal and Liverpool. He was criticised ahead of the game for launching a clothing line during the week but hit back in the right way.

Negatives

It was maybe to be expected after Jose Mourinho picked a 10th different centre-back combination, but United made another slow start. They conceded the first goal for the 13th time this season in just their 24th game. Giving your opponents a head start in more than 50 precent of your games is a big problem and Mourinho is yet to find an answer.

Manager rating out of 10

4 -- It was a gamble to start with a back three given that in the four games he's tried it this season United have conceded 10 times. Lingard's goal quietened the Anfield crowd but Mourinho's decision to change the shape at half-time -- switching from 3-5-2 to 4-3-3 -- didn't work and Liverpool were the better team after the break.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK David De Gea, 6 -- Conceded in the league at Anfield for the first time since March 2015 but also made two good low saves, including one from Roberto Firmino in the second half

DF Diogo Dalot, 6 -- Started the game at right wing-back and had a positive 45 minutes, except for picking up a booking. Surprising that he was the one to make way for Marouane Fellaini at half-time when Mourinho changed the shape.

DF Ashley Young, 5 -- Caught out by Sadio Mane's run in the build up to Liverpool's opener. Tried his best to get forward whenever he got the chance but there were very few opportunities.

DF Matteo Darmian, 6 -- Started an away game in the Premier League for the first time in seven months. Left to fend for himself against Andy Robertson in the second half with Lingard drifting inside.

Jose Mourinho's tactical tinkering failed to deliver a positive result at Anfield.

DF Eric Bailly, 6 -- A late call up after Chris Smalling was injured in the warm-up and you couldn't fault his commitment. Threw himself in front of everything.

DF Victor Lindelof, 6 -- Got away with an early mistake when he gifted the ball to Mohamed Salah. Didn't do much else wrong but couldn't help United weather the storm.

MF Nemanja Matic, 5 -- Didn't get out quickly enough to stop Fabinho flicking the ball over the top for Mane to score after 24 minutes.

MF Ander Herrera, 5 - Not always comfortable on the ball but the chief presser in midfield and covered a lot of ground. Mistake to go to ground trying to stop Mane when Liverpool went back in front in the second half.

MF Jesse Lingard, 7 -- Right place at the right time to take advantage of Alisson's mistake but still needed a clever finish to lift the ball over the Liverpool goalkeeper.

FW Marcus Rashford, 6 -- Worked hard up and down the left but didn't get much of a chance to attack as United often found themselves penned in their own half.

FW Romelu Lukaku, 5 -- Determined run down the left to get the cross in for Lingard to score the equaliser. Often isolated and didn't get a chance to test Alisson.

Substitutes

MF Marouane Fellaini, 5 (for Dalot 45) -- Broke up plenty of Liverpool attacks but gave the ball away a lot.

FW Anthony Martial, N/A (for Herrera 79) -- Brought on late.

MF Juan Mata, N/A (for Lingard 85) - - Preferred to Paul Pogba from the bench. N/A.
