Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari says his close friend Michael Essien will return to the national team, the Sunderland ace has told Ghanasoccernet.com exclusively.

Essien, who plays for English giants Chelsea, has not played for his country since he suffered an injury at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola last year.

He missed the World Cup in South Africa in June and promsied to return to early this year after seeking a leave of absence.

Since then Essien has been evasive about his return to the Black Stars, sparking fears of his reluctance to play for the country.

But, Muntari who is in daily contact with the Chelsea star, insists Essien will return to the national even though he is uncertain of a date.

"Michael will return to play for the national team," Sunderland star Muntari told Ghanasoccernet.com.

"He has been away for a while now but I can guarantee that he has not neglected his country. Michael is a patriot and he will return to play for the people of Ghana."

Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic has made Essien's return to the national team as one of his key objecitves.

The new Black Stars coach recalled Muntari to the team after being snubbed since the World Cup in South Africa.
