Napoli coach praises referee for halting Lazio match

Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri has praised the referee who stopped the game for racism during the visitor’s 2-0 away win over Lazio on Wednesday night.

The match was suspended for five minutes at the Stadio Olimpico after unsavoury racist chants were heard, thought to be aimed at defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

“The referee was right to stop the game.” said Sarri to Rai Sport after the match. “The chants were not right, yet unfortunately we are used to hearing things like this.

“However, we must still highlight the positives as it was only a small minority who chanted.”

Sarri also agreed with the recent claims made by Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri, who stated that the team with the best defence usually wins the Scudetto. Although he did add that his individual focus is on the defensive side of the team.

“Statistics say that he is right,” Sarri added. “It is very rare that the Scudetto is won by the team with the best attack.

“Despite this, our attack is very good, primarily because we have very strong technical players. Although, I work mainly on our defensive structure.”

The Partenopei remain at the top of the Serie A table, leading the Bianconeri by just two points.
